About The Bridge Club

The Bridge Club is a 4-star accommodation located in the Chamkarmorn area of Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This is a very good location as it is near a large mall, cafes, coffee houses and restaurants. Plus, the famous attractions are not too far. Just a short ride on a tuk tuk.

It  is the state of the hotel that is a concern. It is very new. And parts of it are still under construction and renovations. There were times when my friends and I were taking the passenger lifts, and the construction team would move things in and out using the same lifts. Not very professional.

Rooms

There are apparently about 900 to 1,000 rooms. As mentioned earlier, there are various types of rooms available:

  1. Superior Room with King Bed
  2. Deluxe Double Room with City View
  3. Premium Studio Room
  4. Executive Twin Room
  5. One Bedroom Suite Apartment
  6. Two Bedroom Suite Apartment

* Tip: Not all rooms face the Mekong River. Some do not even have windows. So, make sure you ask for a room on a high floor with a view of NagaWorld and Mekong River. Of course, you must book a room that has that potential view.

When I booked, I chose the Deluxe Double with City View room. But this type of room can either face the Mekong River or the other side, which is the other part of Phnom Penh city. The view is just all buildings. So I added instructions in my booking to give me a high floor room with a view of Nagaworld and the Mekong River. And I got such a room! See the awesome view!

The rate per night for my room was USD101 per night. I got it cheaper at USD30 per night. That’s a whopping 70.3% Discount! All thanks to Agoda!

The size of the room is about 37 sq m with 1 Super King Bed. It is really huge for two people. I really enjoyed the space. And of course, the awesome view. I watch it every chance I got.

Amenities

There are quite a lot of amenities at The Bridge Club. But I find the quality of the amenities lacking. For example, the towels were very rough. And the staff a bit raw and untrained. Some were even unfriendly and not very hospitable. But being a hotel that is a work in progress, plus the really affordable rates at this time, it is almost acceptable. I do hope things improve after all the construction and renovation work are done.

What Good Food to Enjoy in Phnom Penh?

The local food is quite similar to the food in the region – Thailand, Vietnam and Laos. So, you will find some dishes that taste about the same; e.g. curry. At the same time, I noticed most places offer Thai, Vietnamese and Laotian meals. All that can even be in one restaurant! You will be spoiled for choice.

My Cambodian friend introduced me to one of their popular coffee chain called Brown Coffee. It is very good. I will share more about this in a future blog post. Also, we had a fantastic local meal at a restaurant called Titanic. Watch for more about food in future posts.

Attractions Nearby

When you stay at The Bridge Club, you will not run short of attractions to visit. There are so many nearby. For those that are near, you can simply take a stroll over there. For those a little further, take the tuk tuk. It is cheap and convenient. Here is a list of some of the nearby attractions, in alphabetical order:

  • Aeon Mall – about 1 km away
  • Diamond Island Convention and Exhibition Center – about 800 m away
  • Independence Monument – about 1 km away
  • NagaWorld Hotel & Entertainment Complex – about 500 m away
  • Phnom Penh City Centre – about 3 km away

Where is The Bridge Club?

The Bridge Club is located at the Chamkarmorn area. It is a very nice area. Not too busy like in the City Center. Yet, close enough that you can easily visit and see many attractions, and enjoy delicious food at good cafes, coffee houses and restaurants. Here is a map to show you where it is located.

Address: Ground floor (unit 18 and 19), near The Bridge SOHO entrance, National Assembly Street, Sngkat Tonle Bassac, Khan Chamkarmorn, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

How To Get There?

By Air

The Bridge Club is around 14 km away from the Phnom Penh International Airport.  There are many airlines that fly to Phnom Penh from many cities. You can check which airlines fly to Phnom Penh on Agoda.

By Road

You can also choose to travel by road if you are going to Phnom Penh from a neighboring country. Do plan your route carefully, and make sure you have all papers ready when you cross the borders.

How To Get Around Phnom Penh?

By Bus

There are buses in Phnom Penh. But it is not easy to understand their routes and timings. Also, they only operate from 5 am to 8 pm. Not very ideal when you need to get around after 8 pm, especially after dinner or after a night out in town.

Plus, parking is usually not a problem because there is ample space almost everywhere.

By Taxi

Do these exist here anymore? Most people take the tuk tuk or Grab. See below.

By Tuk Tuk

These are motorized three-wheeled vehicles that have replaced the traditional pulled trishaws. It is a very cheap mode of transportation. It is not as comfortable as sitting in a car, but it serves the purpose of traveling short distances for very low price.

By Grab

Grab is like Uber in Asia. In fact, it has taken over Uber.

It has become my preferred mode of travel when getting around a foreign city in Asia. One reason is that there is no need to negotiate. Another is that the price is usually reasonable and affordable. No hassles.

It is so easy to travel around in cities now because of Grab. Just download the app, state your destination, a driver is assigned to you, take the transport, and you arrive at your destination. Comfortable and easy.

I have switched to Grab for my travels within a city ever since this option became available.

The Bridge Club – Asia Travel Gems Final Word

Asia Travel Gems Rating: 3.4 out of 5.0

From afar, The Bridge Club looks impressive. It looks like a good hotel with fine service, rooms, amenities, and facilities. But looks can be deceiving.

The room I stayed at was good. Really large room with lots of space. The bed was very comfortable, and the pillows are just the right bounce. They are not too soft till there is no support, and not too hard that it is unpleasant to lie on.

The amenities were plenty. But they lacked quality. They felt like amenities provided in a budget hotel, or a 1-star hotel. They could up the standards.

The facilities are quite all right. All still new. So, no surprise there that it was all good.

The service was the issue. The staff at the Front Desk were not friendly. For example, a local friend of mine drove and parked at the hotel car park. We asked for the parking vouchers since it is free parking for guests. They had to be convinced to give the free parking vouchers for all the days we were staying there. At first, they insisted we go to the Front Desk every day to get the voucher for the day.

I had reason with them that we were already booked and staying for four days. Why can’t they give us the vouchers for all four days? Does it make sense that we are expected to go to the Front Desk every day to get a voucher? We are tourists. We are busy sightseeing and experiencing all the city has to offer. We don’t want to get the voucher daily. After a long while, they finally relented.

Another incident was when housekeeping left only one towel for a room that was meant for two. To get that towel, we had to take the lift from the 30th floor, walk from the SOHO area to the Front Desk, ask for the towel, told we had to wait, and we waited for more than half an hour plus we had to take the towel back to our room.

Finally, the ongoing construction. I don’t know how long this has been going on and how long more it will go on. But it is an inconvenience.

All right, true that the room rates were cheaper because of the construction. But surely the construction crew and the housekeeping staff (with their housekeeping trolley), can take a service lift? It is very unsightly to see all that for a hotel guest.

So, there you have it. Why the rating for this hotel is so low? I would have given it an even lower rating. Maybe even a 2 stars. But because of the view. Ah, that gorgeous view of the city and the Mekong river. That is precious. And for that, they get a slightly higher rating.

  2. This an awesome article and the video is so well done. This review of this hotel is very exciting to me as I love to travel. And always prefer to stay at 4 or 5 star location. As I like comfort. And as you said there customer service will surely improve with a little time. As people stay and leave comments the management will correct these things.
But the price like you I could live with the other things because first it’s cheap. Second it’s absolutely stellar. In appearance. Thank you for this.
    Blessings,
    Scarlett

    1. Thanks Scarlett for your kind praise for the article and video. I am constantly improving on the writing, the photos and the video. This time round, I added an intro to the video, which I will use for all future videos. Plus, I have improved on the videography. Thanks for noticing. 🙂

I love to travel too! When you are planning to visit Phnom Penh, this is definitely a good choice. True, it is not quite up to standards at the moment. But like you said so correctly, they will improve. And the price is really great! Especially when you book with Agoda!

  3. Absolutely beautiful photographs did you take these yourself, if so what camera did you use ? Most impressing article on Phnom Penh Hotel, I sure would not miss home staying in such an awesome place with beautiful scenery as well.

One day I might be able to afford such a vacation myself,
    Jeff

    1. Hi Jeff! Yes, all photos and videos were taken by me. When you see a photo or video with credits to Asia Travel Gems, you can be assured they were taken by me. 🙂

I used my Huawei P9 Plus camera phone. Surprised? haha I have been using smartphones to take photos and videos for a long time. I do intend to get the new Huawei Mate 20 Pro. I heard it captures even better photos and videos. Plus, there are some awesome video effects. Also, I intend to get the Canon G7X Mark III. I heard it will be out this Jan 2019. It takes really good photos and videos. And night scenes are great too! So watch out for better images and videos coming soon to Asia Travel Gems! 🙂

I truly wish for you to visit Asia soon, Jeff. May your travels be safe, fun and happy. 🙂

  4. When I visited this article I was not able to view the video, playback error, but your detailed account was visual enough! Isn’t it funny how poor staff can lead to a downfall in a hotel rating? I have been to several hotels that the staff ruined the experience for us. Customer service is an important part of the business I think. Everything could be covered in gold but if you like kindness and courtesy it might as well be mud. Thank you for the review. This is definitely within my budget and may consider it as an option for stay.

    1. Hi Christina. Sorry about the video not playing. It was playing before. I just checked and strangely enough the embed setting was off. I did not do that. Wonder if it is something YouTube does (they have been known to auto alter settings)? I will check all my videos and future videos on this. Once again, thanks! You can watch the video now please.

Yes, I know right? Hotels are in the hospitality sector. And I firmly believe the staff should be trained to provide excellent service. Not having such service will definitely ruin the experience for guests. And I will not hesitate to lower the ratings for that hotel. The Bridge Club was saved by the clean room and the awesome view. It is truly magnificent. I would find myself on many occasions sitting quietly, and just watching the entire beautiful scenery.

Glad this is an option for you and your loved ones. You will enjoy the stay. It is like a serviced apartment. It has a fridge, water cooler (very important because the water is not safe to drink straight from the tap), a microwave oven, and even a washer/dryer. Very convenient for a family. The supermarket is at Aeon Mall, just about 700 m away. A short stroll and you are there with lots of shopping options and a huge supermarket with lots of grocery choices.

When you do visit Asia, consider booking with Agoda. The offers and discounts are awesome! I always book with them and get great deals. 🙂

  5. This looks like a really great hotel love the swimming pool, I bet that would be refreshing. The rooms seem fairly large and even has a washer and dryer that is a great accommodation. My husband travels a lot and many times he has to find a laundromat to wash his clothes. The view is awesome and I loved watching the video and getting to see everything first hand. I think even with the construction 70% off the room is a great price and yes the view makes it that much better.

    1. Very happy you enjoyed reading the blog post, Dena. And yeah, overall the hotel is quite good. And the view definitely makes it all much better.

I too loved having the washer and dryer. It was so convenient to wash the clothes after a day of touring. Just a couple of hours and voila! The clothes are clean! Your husband will love this too!

If both of you ever travel to Asia, do book with Agoda. I get really great deals (the 70% off!) from them! 🙂

  6. Hello Tim,
Your website is quickly becoming the place to go if one is interested in Asian travel and culture. Once in a while I look at some travel books of countries that I am interested in learning about or someday visiting. I must say that most of the time I’m disappointed at the impersonal nature of the descriptions. The “just the facts” nature of these travelogues doesn’t really give you a good feel for the place. You, on the other hand, with your conversational style and great photos really give one a sense of being at the Phnom Penh Hotels. Thanks for sharing this gem of a post.

    1. Thanks Thabo! Your kind compliments really encourage me to do better. Yes, it will be great when Asia Travel Gems is the site to visit when people are considering visiting Asia or are already here.

Totally agree that travel books can be impersonal and boring. That is one of the reasons why I created this website. I feel it is so much better to hear it from a personal perspective. Very glad you like this style.

And thank you so much for noticing the photos and video. I have improved them this time round, and will continue to improve them. Photos and videos do make a travel site more interesting. And I use them to help people feel as if they are there enjoying the same experience with me.

Wishing you and your loved ones safe, fun and happy travels! 🙂

  7. Hi Timotheus,

Thank you for your thorough and honest review of the Bridge Club Hotel! Now I am familiar with the advantages and downsides when I go there!

Your tips were very up to the point – saving time and money while knowing what to expect from this place.

By the way – the discount of Agoda is fantastic – thank you!

Would you stay at the same hotel if you go back to Phnom Penh again?

    1. You’re welcome, Tony. Glad the review is helpful.
Yes, the tips are one of the gems at this site. 🙂
And yeah! Love the Agoda offers! Whenever I travel, I always book with them. That is why I eventually partnered with them to bring the same great offers to all my readers.
I would love to stay at the same hotel. But because I would like to review more hotels to offer options to my readers, every time I revisit a city, I would book and stay at a different hotel. If not for this purpose, I would definitely stay at this hotel again. The view is the big attraction here. 🙂

  8. Hello Timotheus,

It is always so exciting to read your posts about the fantastic places in Asia.
The hotel pool and the view over the city are just gorgeous. It must be an awesome experience to visit Phnom Penh.
I think it is great that you have written such a thorough hotel review. People who read your post will exactly know what awaits them. When I travel to Asia I will definitively contact you here at your site and ask for your advice. Your pictures make me want to go there immediately.
    Pernilla

    1. Hi Penilla,

Thanks! I am very happy you are back, and enjoyed the latest review of The Bridge Club. It is a really nice hotel. Just a few areas they need to improve. The pool and view helped to keep the rating slightly above average. I am so happy the photos and video encourage you to visit. 🙂

Phnom Penh is really nice. But there are certain things to be aware of. I will share that when I write about the city later.

Look forward to hearing from you when you visit Asia. You and all my readers are welcome to contact me to ask for advice. Drop a comment any time, and I will respond asap. Once again, thanks! 🙂

  9. Another great review Timotheus! Although it sounds like the stay could have been better, especially with the construction going on, the view of the gorgeous city and river made it worth the inconvenience! The pictures and video show a gorgeous place. I am fascinated by the beautiful swimming pools! The amenities you have mentioned are a lot! I’m not sure I’ve ever been in a hotel that offers a washer and dryer, impressive! It looks like a wonderful place to stay and I am sure once they read your review, they will work on employee friendliness as that is obviously lacking. Whenever I read one of your reviews, it gives me the urge to go and visit soon! Thanks again!

    1. Glad to hear the review encourages you to visit soon, Brenda! 🙂
I hope all readers enjoy my reviews, and will be enticed to visit the beautiful cities in Asia. And don’t forget to book with Agoda to enjoy the great deals!

Yes, the hotel could have been better. I am sure they will improve. And when they do, with the pool, the amenities, the magnificent view, it will be a great stay at this hotel.

Thanks for the compliments on the photos and video. I strive to keep improving so that I can bring a great reading experience for all my readers. 🙂
