Hong Kong Hotels – Butterfly On Morrison Boutique Hotel Review

Today, I would like to share with you about one of the best Hong Kong Hotels. This is my Butterfly on Morrison Boutique Hotel Review. I stayed at this hotel in February 2019 when I was in Hong Kong to conduct lectures for the university where I teach at.

It was the university’s policy that lecturers were to book their own hotels. To me, this is great as I get to choose which hotel I would like to stay at. I did my research, and I found Butterfly on Morrison most suitable, mainly because it was so near the institute.

But over the week, I realized how awesome this hotel is. And I would like to share with you all about it.

Hong Kong Hotels – Butterfly On Morrison Boutique Hotel Review – The Video:

With my new Huawei Mate 20 Pro, I managed to get better quality photos and videos for my time in Hong Kong. Watch the video below to see the view of Butterfly on Morrison from afar, from across the street as well as a tour of the Deluxe Room.

About Butterfly on Morrison

Butterfly on Morrison is part of the Butterfly Hospitality Group. This group started in 2008, and specializes in boutique hotels. As such, being smaller, they are able to provide quality and heartfelt service. And I did experience and enjoy such awesome service when I stayed there.

Like all the hotels in the Group, Butterfly on Morrison is ideally located in prime areas. You can read more about the location further down this article.

Another thing to note is that all Butterfly Hotels have a unique theme and design. At the Butterfly on Morrison, the look and feel was contemporary with a classy European style. The large windows in the deluxe room where I stayed gave the room a spacious feel.

Butterfly on Prat, another hotel that I stayed at while I was in Hong Kong during that same month, on the other hand, had a different theme.

Rooms

As mentioned earlier, I stayed at the Deluxe Room. There are many other choices of types of rooms to suit your individual needs:

  1. Superior Room
  2. Superior Room with 4G Pocket WIFI Device
  3. Deluxe Room
  4. Deluxe Room with 4G Pocket WIFI Device
  5. Pure Air Deluxe with 4G Pocket WIFI Device
  6. Family Room with 4G Pocket WIFI Device
  7. Pure Air Executive with 4G Pocket WIFI Device

I chose the Deluxe room because of what I saw on their website’s photos. I loved the idea of two large windows at each side of the huge bed.

I anticipated awesome views from these windows, and requested for a high floor. They gave me the 18th floor. Not really the highest, which is the 22nd floor, but high enough. And the view was good enough.

Though I did suspect the room at the other end of the floor would have a better and less obstructed view. Now that I know, in future, I will ask for rooms facing the Happy Valley.

*Travel Tip: Request for high floor and facing Happy Valley.

Besides the great view, the room was spacious at 20 sq m. You can see how comfortable it was from the video above. Some hotel rooms in Hong Kong are notorious for being really small. At Butterfly on Morrison, there was more than enough space for two to stay at the Deluxe Room.

As always, I booked my room with Agoda. It was because I always get great deals and discounts there. And as always, Agoda did not fail me. I managed to get really good room rates .

The original price of a Deluxe Room per night is SGD687.86 (USD 508.44). I got it at SGD 148 (USD109.4) per night. That’s a massive 78% Discount!

Facilities

As mentioned, this is a boutique hotel. There are very little facilities. This is all right because the hotel is surrounded by many cafes, restaurants and even Dai Pai Dong (local style of dining, usually outdoors) that serves very delicious food.

  • Restaurant
  • Sightseeing tour arrangement

  • On-site car park
  • Doctor on call 24 hours

4G Pocket WIFI Device

A 4G Pocket WIFI Device is a very useful tool when you tour the city. At the airport, there are many providers who offer rental of such a device. I did not get one as I intended to get a pre-paid SIM card, which was what I did the moment I arrived at the airport.

The hotels of the Butterfly Group, including Butterfly on Morrison, offers this 4G Pocket WIFI Device, too. When you book some of the rooms, it is included as part of the package and for free. But some rooms do not include this. So, do look carefully when you book a room. If you book one of the rooms that do not include this device, you can still rent one.

It is really useful. When I traveled around Hong Kong, this tool helped me to stay connected to the Internet. This enabled me to navigate using Google Maps, get info on what good food is around me, where to go for good food, how to get to attractions and landmarks that I would like to visit, do messaging on my Whatsapp, etc.

The downside is that the battery life is short. I have to constantly charge it. There were a few times that I could not charge it because my powerbank was low. Thankfully, I have my pre-paid SIM as a backup.

Another issue is the availability of WIFI. WIFI in Hong Kong is known to be very good. But I noticed that sometimes the device does not have good WIFI connectivity. But that is few and far between. Again, when the WIFI is not working well, I have the pre-paid SIM to access the Internet.

Service Quality

The service quality at this hotel was awesome! The staff at the front desk was very warm, friendly and helpful. They always greeted me with a beautiful smile. And they were always ready to assist and answer any queries.

Few times I asked them where are the best places to enjoy good food that is near the hotel. And they never failed to impress me on their knowledge of the best cafe or restaurant for a particular category of cuisine.

For example, on the first day that I arrived, it was lunch time. I asked them if they knew of any cafe or restaurant nearby that served really good local food. They introduced me to Kam Kee Cafe that is just 5 to 10 minutes walk away. The food and drinks served were truly local, and very delicious. Needless to say, I returned to dine there few more times.

Besides just recommendations for places to dine, they were always very helpful. I have asked them about really popular and delicious food places on Hong Kong Island, attractions nearby and further away, plus directions. Anything.

They were very knowledgeable and were able to provide me really good answers. And if they don’t know, they will immediately search for the answers, and provide them on the spot.

I will teach in Hong Kong again. And I will definitely stay at Butterfly on Morrison again. Not just because of the service. Also, because of the many more reasons below. Keep reading.

Sleep Quality

The bed and pillows gave me very good night’s sleep. The bed was firm and yet when I laid down, it was soft enough to gently wrap my body.

Deluxe Room Bed at Butterfly On Morrison
Deluxe Room Bed at Butterfly On Morrison

Some hotel beds are firm and hard. When our body lies down on it, it is like sleeping on a rock. But not the bed at this hotel. It was very comfortable, and had just the right bounce.

The pillows were large and firm. Again, not the hard sort of firmness. They were firm enough to support my head. At the same time, soft enough that my head gets some comfort rest.

Not at all like some hotels that I have experienced where the pillows were so soft that when I rest my head, I almost sink all the way down to the bed. Here, the pillows gave good support while providing a soft and fluffy feel as you drift off to sleep.

Another plus point is the sound proofing at this hotel. The hotel is along a main road with high traffic, and I hardly heard a peep from the hustle and bustle along there.

Also, I was surprised when I saw the next room has a family staying there with kids. I said I was surprised because I never heard a sound from that room. I only noticed them one evening when I was leaving for dinner, and they were returning to the room.

Services Near the Hotel

There are convenience stores nearby. A Seven Eleven store is just down the road, less than 5 minutes walk away. When you exit the hotel, turn right and head towards Hennessy Road. You can’t miss it.

Along Hennessy Road, which is about 5 to 10 minutes walk away, you will find many cafes, restaurants, and also pharmacies and another local convenience store.

There are many more services around the hotel. If you have a product or service you need, just ask the friendly staff and the front desk. They will know.

Good Food Nearby

It is a known fact that Hong Kong has many really good and delicious food. I truly find that the food here is one of the best in Asia.

Near the hotel, there are plenty of eating places. Immediately nearby, just a few minutes walk away, there are Kam Kee Cafe for local food, Coffee Academics for very good coffee and western style food, and WTF.

Kam Kee Cafe Serving Delicious Local Hong Kong Food

Further down, along Hennessy Road you are spoiled for choices. So many cafes and restaurants offering various delicacies. There was once I walked about 20 minutes to the popular Honolulu Cafe. They are famous for their specialties – Hong Kong Milk Tea and Egg Tart.

Behind the hotel, there are many small eating shops, cafes, restaurants and even dessert shops. There are Brunch Club & Supper, Mother of Pizzas, and the well known Mak’s Noodles.

A littler further away, but still within walking distance, there are lots of places to eat at Times Square and around this popular shopping mall.

Of course, you can venture even further to Causeway Bay where there are lots of shopping malls, hotels, cafes and restaurants. Wan Chai area too has much to offer to fill your tummy

Attractions Nearby

The hotel is strategically placed between Causeway Bay and Wan Chai MTR stations. This offers you easy access via MTR to all the attractions in Hong Kong such as Victoria Peak, Lan Kwai Fong, Victoria Harbour, Big Buddha, Po Lin Monastery, Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car, Avenue of Stars, Avenue of Comic Stars, and many more.

At the same time, there are many attractions nearby. These can be easily reached by walking. Of course, those that are a little further out, you can take the bus or MTR. The nearby attractions are Golden Bauhinia, Victoria Park, Happy Valley, etc.

Where is Butterfly on Morrison?

The hotel is nestled in the prime district between Causeway Bay and Wan Chai station. It is on Morrison Hill Road, next to Happy Valley.

As you can see, at such a strategic location, you can enjoy lots of good food and visit the attractions nearby. Plus, with the MTR, you can travel further for more food choices and explore more sights.

How To Get There?

By Train

After you have arrived at the Hong Kong International Airport, one of the choices to get to this hotel is by the Hong Kong Airport Express train – Quickest Way to the City. Go to the link or the image below to read more details on how to travel this route.

It will take you to the Hong Kong station where you can catch a cab and reach the hotel within 15 to 20 minutes. Or you can choose to change trains and continue on the MTR to Causeway Bay station that is near the hotel. Click on the image above to see how I took the train.

By Road

Another way to the hotel is by catching a cab. The taxi service in Hong Kong is good. And they usually go by the meter.

But when you travel by cab from the Hong Kong International Airport, it can cost more than taking the train or bus.

By Bus

Another option is to take the bus. It is actually not that difficult to take the bus. The Hong Kong bus system is efficient. But you need to know the bus routes. You can ask the customer service at the bus station which bus takes you to Morrison Hill Road.

There is a bus stop just outside the hotel. The question is identifying the bus stop and the hotel so that you know it is the one to alight. I think the Hong Kong Airport Express is a better choice.

Getting Around Hong Kong

I have written a long article about Hong Kong. Within that article there is a section explaining how to get around the city by bus, by taxi, by MTR, and by Grab. Click on the link in bold or the image below to read more about this.

At the same time, here is more information about the MTR stations near the hotel. The Causeway Bay station is about 8 to 10 minutes walk away. If you choose to go to Wan Chai station, that is about 15 to 20 minutes walk from the hotel.

Butterfly on Morrison – Asia Travel Gems Final Word

Asia Travel Gems Rating: 4.6 out of 5.0

This is an awesome hotel! If you are going to stay in Causeway Bay/Wan Chai area, then this is definitely an excellent choice. Especially if you are interested in chic and cosy boutique hotel.

One of the best features of the hotel is the superb service. While the team is young, they are quick to respond, attentive to details, and always eager to assist. Plus, they do it all with a brilliant smile.

With the spacious room and large and comfortable bed, I find I get good sleep every night. And sleep is very important, especially when we travel.

I love the couch next to the window. And spent a few evenings relaxing on it. Just chill and watch the world outside as I sip hot tea before I go out for dinner.

The housekeeping team keeps the entire hotel well maintained and clean. In fact, every area including the room is kept spic and span. In addition, with the splendid contemporary decor, it all made the stay at this hotel an excellent experience.

The floor to ceiling windows truly add to the enjoyment of the deluxe room at Butterfly on Morrison. After a hard day’s work, I would sit on the couch. Sip tea. And just enjoy the awesome view from the windows. Sometimes, at night, after seeing all the interesting places and eating all the good food, I would come back to the hotel room, and just chill on the couch. At night, the view is different. So colorful with all the bright neon lights. 🙂

  6. Another wonderful review Timotheus! The pictures you have provided are breathtaking and the view from those windows is amazing. I loved the video shot showing the pool on the roof, very nice! I am glad to know the only reason you gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was the fact that it is a boutique hotel and doesn’t have all the amenities a larger hotel would have. Personally, I would prefer a smaller hotel so this one would be perfect. Should I ever make it to Hong Kong, and I hope I do, I will certainly book at this one. Thanks again for sharing!

    1. Thanks Brenda! It is always rewarding when readers recognize the amount of work I put into each article. And I am glad you like the pictures and video. I am using my new Huawei Mate 20 Pro to capture all that. And I must say the results are looking good so far.

I totally agree with you that sometimes a smaller hotel is a much better choice. I did have a choice between this boutique hotel and other more established 5 star hotels. And like you, I do prefer the smaller ones that are more personal and charming. Butterfly on Morrison was a wonderful experience. And I will definitely stay there again. 🙂
