Hong Kong Hotels Review – Butterfly on Prat Boutique Hotel Tsim Sha Tsui

Hong Kong Hotels Review - Butterfly On Prat

Hong Kong Hotels Review – Butterfly on Prat Boutique Hotel Tsim Sha Tsui

After my stay at Butterfly on Morrison at Hong Kong Island, I moved to their sister hotel on Prat Avenue. I was elated with Butterfly on Morrison. And had expected good things from the Prat branch. But sadly, I was disappointed. Here, I share with you – Hong Kong Hotels Review – Butterfly on Prat Boutique Hotel Tsim Sha Tsui.

Hong Kong Hotels Review – Butterfly on Prat Boutique Hotel Tsim Sha Tsui – The Overview & Rankings:

Hotel: Butterfly on Prat Boutique Hotel Tsim Sha Tsui
Room Rates: Deluxe Room with 4G Pocket Wi-Fi Device – SGD 170 (USD109.4) per night
Cheapest Place to Book: Agoda
Location: No. 21 Prat Avenue, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong
Rooms:

  1. Superior Room
  2. Superior Room with 4G Pocket WIFI Device
  3. Deluxe Room with 4G Pocket WIFI Device
  4. Pure Air Signature with 4G Pocket WIFI Device
  5. Triple with 4G Pocket WIFI Device

Service: Not so good as the sister hotel, Butterfly on Morrison. They are cordial but not warm. And were so hesitant when I requested for late check out.
Value: For the price, I would not say this boutique hotel offered great value. At most, the value is very minimal.
Sleep Quality: It was all right. Though the bed and pillows could be better.
Cleanliness: Clean but not the highest quality level. Again, just the bare minimum.
Asia Travel Gems Rating: 2.0 out of 5.0

Hong Kong Hotels Review – Butterfly on Prat Boutique Hotel Tsim Sha Tsui – The Video:

A word of caution. Especially if you have seen the Butterfly on Morrison video. This hotel, part of the Butterfly franchise, does not impress. The video does not lie.

Sadly, the hotel looked old and in need of a fresh coat of paint. It irks me that they sell it online as ‘young and vibrant’. Not!

About Butterfly on Prat Boutique Hotel Tsim Sha Tsui

Like Butterfly on Morrison, this hotel is part of the Butterfly Group of Hotels. Unfortunately, it does not measure up to the Morrison.

What this has going for it is the location. It is at the heart of vibrant Tsim Sha Tsui. All the shopping, museums, and famous attractions are within walking distance. A few MTR stations are close by. So, that makes traveling around Hong Kong an easy task.

While looking tired, they do try to be updated. So, they offer 4G Pocket Wi-Fi Device. I am not impressed. And I explain why further down this review.

Rooms

This small boutique hotel boasts 158 spacious rooms. And they also seem to be proud of their strong colors that they claim are young and vibrant in style. To me, the colors look dated and a bit gaudy. The paint does not look fresh, too.

This is a smoke-free hotel, and the rooms offered are as follows:

  1. Superior Room
  2. Superior Room with 4G Pocket WIFI Device
  3. Deluxe Room with 4G Pocket WIFI Device
  4. Pure Air Signature with 4G Pocket WIFI Device
  5. Triple with 4G Pocket WIFI Device
  6. Executive with 4G Pocket WIFI Device
  7. Family Room with 4G Pocket WIFI Device
  8. Deluxe Family Room with 4G Pocket WIFI Device

I chose the Deluxe room mostly because I booked the same for Butterfly on Morrison. And I wanted to compare.

Butterfly on Prat Deluxe Bedroom
Butterfly on Prat Deluxe Bedroom

The photos on their website made me a little hesitant. I almost wanted to book another hotel. And I wished I did.

One of the saving grace is that the room is quite spacious. In Hong Kong, it is not easy to get a room with so much space. I had the good fortune to stay at the top floor. And the ceiling was high. So it made the room looked more spacious.

*Travel Tip: If you really must stay here, ask for rooms on the top floor. At least you get high ceiling that makes it look spacious.

Facilities

None that I know of.

4G Pocket WIFI Device

It seems all Butterfly hotels offer this device. It is very handy. In the sense that you get Wi-Fi via the device everywhere you go in Hong Kong. Supposedly.

The down side is that it needs constant charging. So, if you do not have a battery charger with you, you can kiss the Wi-Fi goodbye. And I can tell you that happened most of the time. The battery life of their devices are so short!

In addition, the Wi-Fi connectivity was not reliable. So many times I noticed my phone not getting the Wi-Fi access. In the end, the pre-paid SIM I purchased at the airport served me much better.

Service Quality

The service quality at Butterfly on Prat was not so good as the service quality at Butterfly on Morrison. And this surprised me.

I am a marketer, who is also a lecturer on marketing. And branding is very important to me. As such, brand consistency is something that I believe brands should uphold.

Thumbs Down

It was not that the Butterfly on Prat staff were rude or disrespectful. They were just cordial. Rarely a smile. And they answer like a robot. Might as well be a robot behind the front desk.

At one point, I requested for late checkout. My flight back to Singapore was in the late evening. As such, checkout at 12 pm would have left me too much time to spare.

But when I asked, the staff did not even check if it was possible, and just told me no. I had to explain my reason before another staff came along and offered checkout at 1 pm.

It was not great but at least it was something. So, I thanked them and accepted it. I thought I would stow my luggage at the baggage area, and explore the city a bit more for the afternoon.

But the bad aftertaste of bad service was too much. Eventually, I left in a cab around 12.30 pm. I would rather spend the afternoon in the airport then within the vicinity or at this hotel.

Sleep Quality

It was not great. The bed was not very comfortable. The pillows were too soft.

And for some reason, the panel with a latch at the top of the ceiling had me wondering if someone would open it late at night and creep down into my room. Took me a while to fall asleep. Urgh!

Services Near the Hotel

For convenience, for all your needs like drinks such as orange juice, top up of Octopus card, or even an umbrella for the rainy season, there are a couple of convenience stores nearby. One of them is 7-11. The other is a local version of this franchise.

There is also a supermarket. I did not notice it at first. But a lot of free time in the evening enabled me to spot it. It was in the basement. So, you have to look down as you walk along Prat Avenue to see the entrance of the supermarket.

Along the same road and the roads further down, you can find all types of stores selling clothing, electronics and even herbs and spices.

Good Food Nearby

You will never starve in Hong Kong. And in Tsim Sha Tsui, even more impossible.

There are so many cafes and restaurants almost every few meters. The only thing you need to do is to make a choice. There are local Hong Kong food, dim sum, Korean food, Japanese food, Italian food, and even fast food. Watch the video above, and you will see a MacDonalds.

Hong Kong Food - Super Delicious Dim Sum known as Siu Mai (Pork Dumpling)

For more info about where to enjoy good food, check out my Hong Kong Food section.

Attractions Nearby

Kowloon has lots of interesting sights to see. And Butterfly on Prat excels in being at the right location. There are many attractions nearby.

There is the Avenue of Comic Stars, The Avenue of Stars, the many museums, Victoria Harbour, the Clock Tower, plus many more.

And if these are not enough, you can always take the MTR to Hong Kong Island for Victoria Peak, Lan Kwai Fong, Golden Bauhinia, Hollywood Road, Street Art, Man Mo Temple and many more attractions.

What To See In Hong Kong - Big Buddha Blesses Everyone

Also, the MTR can get you to Lantau Island where you can ride the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car to see the Big Buddha, Po Lin Monastery, Ngong Ping Village, and Wisdom Path.

Where is Butterfly on Prat?

As mentioned above, Butterfly on Prat is at the heart of pulsating Tsim Sha Tsui. It is situated along Prat Avenue, and near Nathan Road.

How To Get There?

By Train

From the airport, you can reach this hotel with the Hong Kong Airport Express train – Quickest Way to the City. When you reach Hong Kong station, walk over to the Central terminal. Then take the red line towards Tsuen Wan.

Alight at Tsim Sha Tsui station. It takes about 5 minutes to walk from the station to the hotel.

*Travel Tip: Do this only if you have 1 small luggage or backpack. The walkways from the station to the hotel can make lugging any larger luggage difficult.

By Road

A ride from a cab from the airport to the hotel is quite easy to get. And so is a ride from the hotel to the airport.

At the airport, look out for the cab counter. They can assist you. Just make sure you inform them whether you are going to Kowloon or Hong Kong Island. Read more about how to hail the right taxi in my article about Hong Kong.

For your info, Butterfly on Prat offers limousine service or transport arrangement to and from the hotel. When you book online, contact them for more information. Take note that travel fees apply.

By Bus

Butterfly hotels offer shuttle bus from airport to hotel and from hotel to airport. This hotel is no exception. When you book your room online, contact them for help to arrange for shuttle bus. Remember to check the price as current bus fees apply.

Getting Around Hong Kong

Butterfly on Prat Boutique Hotel Tsim Sha Tsui – Asia Travel Gems Final Word

If you have a better choice for hotel stay, choose that. I know I will never go back to Butterfly on Prat for sure.

Two Star Rating Medal

This hotel seriously needs an overhaul. I do not understand how good Butterfly on Morrison is, and how bad Butterfly on Prat can be.

They should train the staff at this hotel to provide service like the one at Morrison.

What a world of difference these two are even though they are part of the same group. The staff at Morrison is so warm, friendly and helpful. The ones at Prat are just cold.

In addition, the entire hotel needs a new look. I don’t know what year the concept is from but to claim it is young and vibrant is misleading.

The paint on the walls look tired. The colors are gaudy. Really bad choices of colors. Have they heard of Pantone Color of the Year? Or at least the latest trends in colors?

While they do win with spacious rooms, they really need to upgrade and update the rooms. The bathroom looks so old and outdated. Where is the rain shower that is at Morrison?

Butterfly on Prat Bathroom. No rain shower. Boo.
No rain shower. Boo.

Watch the video above to see what I mean. And I am sure you will agree that, sadly, they only get 2 stars rating.

Penang Hotels Review – Cititel Express Penang

Penang Hotels - Cititel Express

Penang Hotels Review – Cititel Express Penang

After checking out of Hotel Excelsior in Ipoh, we were back on the highways and onwards to Penang. I was very excited as I have heard a lot about Penang – the arts, the culture, the beautiful temples, the awesome attractions, and of course the delicious food! In a few hours, we reached George Town, and checked in at one of the Penang Hotels. This time, we chose the no frills Cititel ExpressPenang.

These days, many people look for such hotels. After all, when we visit a city, most of the time we are out exploring her. The hotel is just a space to shower, rest and sleep. I believed we found such a hotel to suit our travel needs. Read on to find out what this hotel offers, and how it may be the choice for your next visit to Penang.

About Cititel Express Penang

Cititel Express Penang is one of the many Penang Hotels located in the heart of George Town. As such, it is within walking distance to the World Heritage Sites, streets featuring Colorful Mural Art, and best of all, the many famous and popular Penang food such as Chendol, Fried Kway Teow, and more.

The ‘Express’ part of its name indicated to guests that this is a hotel with the bare minimum of facilities and amenities. It is like a slightly higher end of a budget hotel. Currently, as of writing this review, the hotel is still relatively new. As such, the furnishings and fittings are still contemporary and up to date.

It is about 5 minutes from the Penang Ferry Terminal. So, if you are arriving by ferry, it is very easy access back and forth. The Penang International Airport and Penang Bridge are both just about 20 minutes drive to and from the hotel. Going to Tanjung Bungah and Batu Feringghi? That is just a 30 minute drive.

What Good Food to Enjoy in Penang?

One of the main reasons to travel to Penang is to enjoy the wonderful and delicious food. There are certain stalls that sell really great food.

Before arriving Penang, I had heard about all the awesome food but only at certain stalls. As a tourist, I had no idea which were these stalls and where they were. Thankfully, the hotel provided a map to show where each of these stalls are located and what were their specialty.

In the coming days, I will share with you more details about each of these gastronomical pleasures. Meantime, here is a list that are near this hotel:

  • Chendol – Teochew Chendol Penang Road
  • Fried Kway Teow – Kafe Ping Hooi – Carnavon Street
  • Bak Kut Teh – Restoran Cheng Heong – Air Itam
  • Assam Laksa – Coffeeshop at the Foothill of Ayer Itam Dam
  • Curry Mee – Hot Bowl Rangoon Road & 50, Lorong Seratus Tahun
  • Hokkien Mee – Ah Soon Kor Stall, Kim Sin San Coffee Centre, MacAlister Road
  • Lor Mee and Wan Tan Mee – Ipon Lane (next to Jelutong Market)
  • Lor Bak – Kheng Pin Coffeeshop – Sri Bahari Road
  • plus many more. Ask for entire list when you are at Cititel Express Penang

Attractions Nearby

There is a lot to see and experience in just George Town alone. With its rich history and culture, the place has earned the award of being one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. This is because of the many original colonial and chinese-style shophouses. Here are a few that are near this hotel.

  • Blue Mansion (Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion) – Leith Street
  • Khoo Kongsi (Khoo Association Clan House) – Cannon Square
  • Arts & Crafts – Armenian Street
  • The Chew, Lee, Tan and Lim Clan Jetties – Weld Quay
  • Kek Lok Si Temple
  • Penang Hill
  • Street Mural Art

There are many more interesting places to visit and see in Penang. These can be found in Tanjung Bungah and Batu Feringghi, and many more. For example, there is the awesome and delightful Entopia. Do take time to explore this amazing city.

Where is Cititel Express Penang?

As mentioned, Cititel Express Penang is located in the heart of George Town. It is within easy access to many of the local attractions, famous food places, ferry terminal, airport and the Penang bridge. Below is a map of its location.

Address: No. 123, Nordin Street, Georgetown, Penan, Malaysia, 10300

How To Get There?

By Road

The Penang Bridge connects the Malaysian mainland to the island of Penang. We drove, by car, along the Malaysian Highways, cross the Penang Bridge, and to George Town. This route can be taken by bus, cab or Grab.

By Air

There is a local Penang International Airport. There is a select number of airlines that you can take to fly to this airport. From the airport, you can call a cab or use Grab to get transport to this hotel.

Getting Around

By Train

This is a small town. There are no train services.

By Bus

There is a Free bus service operated by Rapid Penang. It can bring you to major attractions, shops and city events. It is called the Central Area Transit (CAT). Get a map from their website, and simply board their buses at any specially marked stops on specified routes. The only concern here is that you will have to travel within their bus schedules.

By Car

If you drove to Penang, you are at an advantage. Traffic is not as heavy as cities such as Kuala Lumpur. Navigating around is easy, especially if you have Waze app.

Plus, parking is usually not a problem because there is ample space almost everywhere.

By Taxi

They rarely go by meter.

Tip: Negotiate and agree on a price before you take the taxi.

Better Tip: Do not take the cab, go by Grab (see below).

By Grab

This is my preferred option. One reason is that there is no need to negotiate. Another is that the price is usually reasonable and affordable. No hassles.

It is so easy to travel around in cities now because of Grab. Just download the app, state your destination, a driver is assigned to you, take the transport, and you arrive at your destination. Comfortable and easy.

I have switched to Grab for my travels within a city ever since this option became available.

Cititel Express Penang – Asia Travel Gems Final Word

From the start, it was clear that we were looking for a no frills hotel on a low budget. With these expectations, we truly should not expect a fine hotel with top quality stay experience. So, to be fair, while this hotel received a 3.0 rating, this hotel did very well as it lived up to the expectations.

Three Point Star Rating

The room was very clean. Housekeeping did a good job keeping the room tidy, neat and clean.

Also, we wanted a room just for shower and sleep. We intended to spend the days exploring the city. The room was never meant to be a space for rest.

So, while it was small, it was designed to have everything just at the right amount for what we wanted – decent bathroom facilities and a good bed to sleep on.

If you are like us, and travel to explore. Plus, a room is just to store your luggage, return to shower, and a bed just for a good night’s sleep. Then Cititel Express Penang is just right for you. At the prices offered by Agoda, it is definitely great value.

What Good Food to Enjoy in Ipoh?

One of the things to do, that everyone who visits Ipoh do, is to enjoy the good food there. We know we did! The good news is that just behind Hotel Excelsior Ipoh, there is the famous and popular dim sum place called Fo Shan Dim Sum. Locals and tourists flock here to enjoy delicious dim sum. And a short drive away, you can enjoy the well known Lou Wong Chicken Rice. When you visit Ipoh, you must try the chicken rice here. Plus, just across the road from Hotel Excelsior Ipoh is the Oversea Restaurant where you can enjoy flavorful Chinese dishes that is as close to fine dining as you can get here.

Attractions Nearby

While the attractions at Ipoh are considered near Hotel Excelsior Ipoh, there are some that you could simply walk to, and there are those that it would be better if you have a car to drive you there or at least get a taxi or Grab. We spent a lovely afternoon at Kek Lok Tong Cave Temple and Zen Gardens. This is truly an awesome place to visit. The serenity is truly refreshing. Then there is, of course, the famous Batu Caves. There is a lot of history and art in Ipoh. And only so much time for you to see as much as you can. So, take your pick. For us, we visited the Concubine Lane, the Ipoh Mural Art Trail, Art of OldTown, and Ho Yan Hor Museum. We wanted to visit the Ipoh World at Han Chin Pet Soo, but it was closed by the time we reached there. Maybe next time?

How To Get There?

For us, as I mentioned, we were on a road trip. Our first stop was Kuala Lumpur. We drove along the highway to Ipoh, which took us a few hours only. Our next stop will be Penang. From the highway, using the Waze app, we easily reached and found the Hotel Excelsior Ipoh. You can do the same as what I did – that is, to fly to Kuala Lumpur International Airport, then take a bus, drive or get Grab to go to Ipoh. There are many bus services that go to Ipoh from Kuala Lumpur. You can do Google search to find such services.

Tip: My Advice – Take a Cab or Grab to Ipoh. You can choose the time to depart, and it is not expensive.

Tip: There is a local airport – the Sultan Azlan Shah Airport. But, there are few airlines, and no international ones that stop there. Better you take my suggestion above. At the same time, you get to visit Kuala Lumpur, too!.

Getting Around

By Train

This is a small town. There are no train services.

By Bus

There are local buses, but information on their routes and stops are not well provided. The town is so small, it is better to take taxi or Grab.

By Car

If you drove to Ipoh, you are at an advantage. Traffic is not as heavy as cities such as Kuala Lumpur. Navigating around is easy, especially if you have Waze app. Plus, parking is usually not a problem because there is ample space almost everywhere.

Tip: Public parking requires coupons. You can buy them from stores nearby parking areas.

Tip: There are people hanging around public parking areas, and claiming to collect fees. It is up to you, but I would advise paying a small sum for the safety of your car.

By Taxi

They rarely go by meter.

Tip: Negotiate and agree on a price before you take the taxi.

Hotel Excelsior Ipoh – Asia Travel Gems Final Word

Three Point Star Rating

This is quite a good hotel. Unfortunately, it lost points for the very soft pillows. Our sleep was affected. And good sleep is so important isn’t it? The room was clean and well furnished. Housekeeping did a good job keeping the room, bed, en suite bathroom, towels, and everything else spotless. The Superior Room was small. Yet, it was just nice for two persons who intended to drop everything the minute they checked in, and explore the city. In effect, the room is just functional. A place to shower and sleep. Ahhh, there’s the rub again. The reason why the rating is an average 3.0. Sleep. It was not so good. Sleep aside, all else was good. If you are like us, and travel to explore, then Hotel Excelsior Ipoh is just right for you. At the prices offered by Agoda, it is a great value.
